When you are looking at how to build your business online, ironically the place to start is with a correct mindset. I learned this from Daegan Smith, one of the top internet marketers in the world. He said to ask yourself if you are starting a business because it’s something you love to do long term or are you starting a business because you need money now?

If your answer is the second response, maybe a business wouldn’t be the right thing for you right now. That’s not to say that you cannot come online and make money, but if your mindset if that of desperation, you should look at other avenues to make money.

If we start to think about how to build a business online as a way to bring a product or service that fulfills a need, then we are on the right track. When we think in those terms, we are not coming from a place of desperation, but a place of inspiration. The money will follow your ability to fill a need or solve a problem many people may have.

Why do we even have excuses anyway? Is it fear we can’t do something? Is it laziness? Excuses are self imposed. You know that, right?

YOU are the only one holding yourself back. If you let excuses get in your way, you’ll never get what you want out of life. There are many people throughout history who could have let excuses hold them back. But what allowed them to break through, I believe, is a sense of purpose and a burning desire that failure was NOT an option.

So how do you make your excuses begone? One of my mentors said if it’s fear that’s holding you back, find the DESIRE that will overcome it and you will always move past any obstacle.

What I do on a daily basis is ask myself a series of questions of “how can I___________?” Fill in the blank with whatever you want to accomplish. I truly believe that whenever you ask a question of “how can I?” that it is ALWAYS answered. It may take a few years, like it did for Steve Caro, but if you keep asking, the answer WILL come.

Never look back on your life with regrets. If excuses are holding you back, ask yourself if it’s your goal or someone else’s goal. If it’s what you really want, you WILL find a way to get past every obstacle.

How many times have you been with someone and they are talking and you are not listening at all to what they are saying? I believe the greatest gift you can give someone is the gift of your attention, especially while they are speaking to you.

You know how it feels when you have been with someone and you feel they were not listening to you or were only half present when you were talking? It doesn’t make you feel important, does it?

One of the most important skills in building relationships and your business is to develop
good listening skills. It’s not as hard as it may seem.

I think Eckhart Tolle describes the art of listening and developing good listening skills the best: “You cannot feel someone else’s Being except through your own. This is the beginning of the realization of Oneness, which is love.”

By the way, if you have not read Eckhart Tolle’s book on how to stay in the present moment, “The Power of Now,” I highly recommend it.

The best way I can describe how to develop good listening skills is to be fully present and feel the other person’s presence. To do this, make a conscious effort to relax, take slow diaphragmatic breaths, and just “be”, not thinking about anything except feeling their presence and listening to their words. By focusing on your deep breaths, you will clear your mind of thoughts and be able to be present.

If you practice this, I can tell you this is a very rewarding experience for yourself and for the person who is speaking. You will feel a sense of relaxation come over you and that person will feel valued. Try it, you’ll like it!
