How important do you think it would be to your business to remember names?
Ron White, USA memory champion, told a powerful story of how this largely impacted his business. He said he met a woman, Rena Tarbet, at a chamber of commerce event and recalled her name when he saw her at a later date somewhere else. Rena was very impressed Ron remembered her name outside the context in which they originally met. He later got a phone call from her requesting that he speak at event she was having at a local hotel.
When he got there, he was expected there to be a small gathering of people, but it turns out Rena Tarbet was a business partner of Mary Kay. The room was filled with hundreds of people. When he arrived, she put her arm around Ron and introduced him as her friend (just because he had remembered her name!) She said Ron has some great products and I recommend you all buy his product. Needless to say, because of the standing this woman had in the community and in the business world, no one thought twice about taking out their wallet and buying Ron’s product.
This is a great example of how remembering someone’s name could greatly impact your business. But of course it should not be because you want something from that person, but just because it is the right thing to do. Someone feels important when you take the time to remember their name and they feel like they matter.
Nothing is sweeter to the ear than the sound of your own name. Ron explains here how you can remember someone’s name:
Check this out. Amazing! But the great part is that you can learn to do this too:
There are 5 Steps to Powerful Memory and remembering names:
1. Focus – ask yourself “what is your name?” when you are approaching the person
2. Files- pick out a dominant feature on their face
3. Picture- picture that goes a long with their name
4. Glue – stick the picture on the prominent feature
5. Review- review the file, picture and glue after you leave
Practice what Ron says in his video for the next 21 days and you will become good at remembering names. Here are a few examples of some common names and the picture you can use:
Greg – keg
Ben – bench
Bill – duck’s bill
Fred – fried egg
Mike – microphone
Beth- bath
Donna – Donald Duck
Chris – cross
Kay – key
Kim – swim
Examples of files are: large nose, prominent ears, bushy eyebrows, pointed chin, or a mole.
Ron has one and two day seminars on how to improve your memory and also speaks to organizations and groups all over the world. In one day at one of Ron’s seminars, I learned all the presidents & I can still remember them to this day. It’s exciting to know we all have a great memory and can constantly improve. Hi Karen,
This is brilliant – thanks for sharing these techniques & Ron’s videos. I’ll be practising, as I remember faces but struggle with names.
Best wishes

Tracey,
Yes, it’s amazing what any of us can do with our mind, if given the proper techniques. I have practiced this with great results and people’s faces light up when you remember their names and they feel like they matter and are important. One of the best gifts you can give someone!
Hi Karen, That’s a wonderful article and video. Great advice. I’m still getting over Rena Tarbet being at a Chamber of Commerce meeting. He only picked one of the most successful National Sales Directors in Mary Kay! LOL.
I so needed this post!
I struggle to remember names and I believe this will really help! I’ve tried rhyming names with another word and I’ve tried repeating someone’s name several times after meeting them, which helps.
Thanks for “introducing” me to Ron White!

Hey Karen,
I guess I am a Bath hehe…I totally agree. It is always a nice feeling when someone remembers your name when you don’t expect them too. It is definitely a skill I will be investing in.
Great post, such a a simple tip can make the world of difference.

Beth,
Thanks for stopping by. Yes, as they say, there is no sweeter sound to someone’s ears than the sound of their own name. Let me know how this works for you. It’s definitely worth the effort I have found.
Heather,
Glad you stopped by. Yes, Ron is amazing. If you can make it to one of his seminars, I highly recommend it. He happens to live near me and I plan to attend more of his seminars and bring my niece and nephew.
Can you imagine if all children were taught this in school how much easier college would be for them? I remember trying to memorize a semester’s worth of material for 6 different finals all on the same day!!!
Rebecca,
Yes, he did pick the right name to remember! You just never know…..
Hey Karen,
