Keyword Research, Have You Mastered It?

by karen on May 18, 2010

If there is one skill you need to master in internet marketing, it is keyword research. Why? If you are targeting a keyword that you THINK is good and it turns out it is not a keyword you would be likely to rank #1 for, you are wasting time and money. Now who wants to do that?

So what do you need to know about keyword research? There is much more to it than meets the eye, but it is definitely something you can master. Once you do that, you are in a position to make some good money.

A keyword tool will help you determine the number of searches a certain keyword receives every month. But does that translate into the number of clicks you will receive if you rank #1 on the first page of Google for that keyword? Likely not. Research shows 42% of people click on the #1 entry, so if you rank first, you can count on about 42% of the monthly global searches.

Only 10% of traffic extends past the first page of Google, so it’s important to not only get on the first page, but to choose a keyword that will allow you to rank #1 on the first page.

There are many factors that determine your competition to the keyword you are using. There are offsite factors and onsite factors.

Offsite factors that contribute to competition are:
1) Domain age
2) Page Rank
3) Backlinks to page
4) Backlinks to domain
5) Backlinks from .edu and .gov
6) DMOZ listing
7) Yahoo listing

Onsite Factors that contribute to competition are:

1) Number of pages on site
2) Keyword in title
3) Keyword in URL
4) Keyword in description
5) Keyword in heading
6) Cache age

To help you sort through all this information and determine what keyword would be the best keywords to use and ensure you will make money with your marketing, listen to the amazing Jeff Hoffman in the best training I have heard on keyword research.
